Obituary for Bertha Lalande (Hébert)

Bertha Lalande (Hébert)
Sadly, Michel and Johanne announce the passing of their mother, Bertha Lalande, at Extendicare Nursing Home on February 21, 2018 at age 84. A lifelong resident of Kapuskasing, Bertha, over the years, was known by almost everyone from her community involvement including the Kapuskasing Association for Community Living, Jeanne Sauve Family Services, Kapuskasing Golden Age Club and the Kapuskasing Golf Club.
Bertha was predeceased by her husband and best friend, Norm, in 2016 as well as her younger brothers, Bob in 1988 and John just last month. She is survived by her sisters Clotilde, Suzanne, Mariette, and Jackie. She was very proud of her children Johanne (Guy) and Michel (Julie) whom she always spoiled although not to the extent that she spoiled her grandchildren Matthew, Nathan, Jeremy, Nicholas, Holly, Mackenzie and Kelsey. In turn, Bertha, was spoiled by Norm for 50 years who in the first week of marriage let it be known that he would do the cooking for the family; not one to break her promise to him never to interfere in the kitchen, the result was she never had to cook a meal in 50 years!
Her friends forever for canasta games and all types of other good times were Claire Simpson, Gaye Doyle and Rose Watters.
One of her proudest and most important parts of her life was her contribution to the activities of the Special Olympics for which she was a supporter, coach, travel agent, bus driver and number one fan locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. Jeanne Sauve Family Services presented annually the Bertha Lalande Award for outstanding public service and commitment to the lives of children and families. Bertha was the first recipient, and the plaque was one of her most important possessions. Each year, she would meet with the Director of the Jeanne Sauve Family Services to help select the person to receive the award. Despite being offered bribes by her son in law to make the short list in at least one year, she stayed with her principles and only supported those with merit.
She has now gone to play golf once again with Norm and, no doubt, will soon be the president of the club organizing many tournaments for all and demanding equal status for the women as well as the men. Thanks for everything, Good Luck and Godspeed, Mom.
A celebration of Bertha’s life will be held on Saturday, October 6th at 10:30 a.m. at the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Kapuskasing Extendicare Resident’s Fund would be greatly appreciated.
The family sincerely thanks all the dedicated staff at Extendicare Nursing Home for all their good and kind care of Bertha.
