Michael Andrew Hill MD, BSc

Michael died in his home in Kapuskasing, Ontario, on Saturday, July 26, 2014. A beloved family physician in Kapuskasing for twenty-five years, Dr. Hill ran his own practice, served in the Sensenbrenner ER, and contributed as a GP anaesthesiologist and coroner.

Born in Montreal and educated in North York, he attended the University of Toronto, graduating with the Prince Philip Gold Medal for placing first in the Faculty of Science. He then went on to graduate third from the Faculty of Medicine, winning a second Gold Medal.

Mike was also an exceptional athlete. He ran at least three marathon races including the London Marathon. He was on the varsity cross-country ski team at U of T. He remained an excellent runner, cyclist, and skier throughout his life.

Dr. Hill completed a specialist residency at York County Hospital, York, England, not far from his ancestral home in Yorkshire. Dr. Hill returned to Canada as an anesthesiologist to live in Ontario’s northern towns before settling in Kap where he married and began his family.

Mike is survived by his children Andrew and Louise and their mother, Anna. He will be remembered by them for his intelligence, his commitment to his work, and his courage in the face of chronic illness.

He was much loved and cherished by his twin sister Glynnis (Robert, Mike’s Godson, and David); his brothers Martin (Agnes, Nicole, Marek, Elizabeth); Adrian (Michael-his namesake, Maddy and Kevin, Benjamin, Rachel, Samuel, Joel, Debora and Nelly); and Stephen (Atsuko, Keita) who provided Mike’s main family support for the last two years of his life.

Michael was an innovative scientist and compassionate family doctor who worked tirelessly for his patients. He was grateful for his close friends in Kapuskasing, Toronto, and abroad, as well as the support of the Kap community. Special thanks to his neighbours Irene and Gerry, his office manager Claudette, his medical colleagues, volunteers Janet Shedden and Sandra Barbeau, and the entire staff of Sensenbrenner Hospital.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 8 Cedar St., Kapuskasing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association or a charity of your choice are appreciated.

Un médecin de famille bien-aimé à Kapuskasing pendant vingt-cinq ans, Dr Hill gérait sa propre pratique, servait dans le service d’urgence à l’Hôpital Sensenbrenner, et contribuait comme omnipraticien, anesthésiologiste et coroner.

Né à Montréal et éduqué à North York, il a étudié à l’Université de Toronto, obtenant son diplôme et la médaille d’or du Prince Philippe, se classant premier à la faculté des Sciences. Il a remporté une deuxième médaille d’or lorsqu’il a obtenu son diplôme de la faculté de Médecine où il s’est classé troisième.

Michael était également un athlète exceptionnel. Il a participé au moins trois fois à des marathons, y compris le marathon de Londres. Il a fait partie de l’équipe de ski de fond de l’Université de Toronto. Il est demeuré un excellent coureur, cycliste et skieur tout au long de sa vie.

Dr Hill a complété une résidence de spécialiste au York County Hospital, York, Angleterre, non loin de la demeure ancestrale à Yorkshire. Dr Hill est revenu au Canada comme anesthésiologiste pour vivre en différentes villes du Nord de l’Ontario, avant de s’établir à Kapuskasing, où il s’est marié et a fondé une famille.

Michael laisse pour pleurer sa perte ses enfants Andrew et Louise ainsi que leur mère Anna. Ils se souviendront de lui pour son intelligence, son dévouement au travail et son courage en luttant contre la maladie chronique.

Il était bien aimé par les membres de sa famille qui le chérissaient, dont sa sœur jumelle Glynnis (Robert, le filleul de Michael, et David); ses frères Martin (Agnes, Nicole, Marek, Elizabeth); Adrian (Michael – son éponyme, Maddy et Kevin, Benjamin, Rachel, Samuel, Joel, Debora and Nelly); et Stephen (Atsuko, Keita) qui fut le principal soutien familial de Michael pendant les deux dernières années de sa vie.

Michael était un scientiste innovateur et un omnipraticien qui faisait preuve de compassion et qui travaillait sans relâche pour ses patients. Il était reconnaissant pour ses proches amis de Kapuskasing, Toronto et outre-mer, de même que pour l’appui de la communauté de Kapuskasing. On remercie en particulier ses voisins Irene et Gerry, son gérant de bureau Claudette, ses collègues médicaux, les bénévoles Janet Shedden et Sandra Barbeau, ainsi que tout le personnel de l’Hôpital Sensenbrenner.

On célébrera la messe funéraire à 10h30 le mercredi 17 septembre 2014, à l’église catholique St. Patrick's, au 8 rue Cedar, Kapuskasing.
