Obituary for / Nécrologie pour Gladys Gillissie
It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Gladys Irene Gillissie (nee Hastings), at the age of 98 years, on December 20th, 2022, at Extendicare Kapuskasing.
Gladys was born in Ottawa on August 31st, 1924. She spent her youth in New Britain, Connecticut, before moving back to Canada with her parents and siblings. She met Edward in Ottawa and together, they raised their family of five boys and one girl in Kapuskasing. Gladys was a pioneer for the “working woman” and had a career in finances spanning over four decades, beginning at Stanley Tools in Connecticut and concluding at the Board of Education in Kapuskasing. She cherished the many years she volunteered for the Sensenbrenner Hospital Auxiliary and the CWL of St. Patrick’s Church, receiving her life memberships for both commitments, something she was very proud of.
Gladys is survived by her sons: Douglas, David (Denise), Brian (Hélène), and Kevin (Diane); her daughter, Valerie Silas (Marc); and daughter-in-law, Diann. Gladys is grandma to 11 grandchildren: Duane (Collin), Keith (Stacie), Joel (Natalie), Ryan, Craig, Jason (Virginia), Tania (Corey), Bryana, Brandon (Tara-Lynn), Conor (Émilie), and Kalem (Bryanne). She is Great-Grandma to Courtney, Jenevieve, Ethan, Keira, Elijah, and her newest addition, Evy. Gladys is also survived by one brother, Robert Hastings; and many nieces and nephews.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Edward; and her son, Ronald; as well as her parents, John and
Bertha Hastings; and two sisters: Winnifred Chappel and Edna Hastings.
As quoted in her 1942 graduation yearbook, “Nature I love, and next to nature – art.” These passions stood the test of time throughout her life. Gladys fancied writing and expressed herself creatively through painting, knitting, and gardening. She always watched the news and still tried to keep up with this ever-changing world. Gladys was a “smart cookie” and a tough one at that too! She was at her happiest when surrounded by family, and we are forever grateful for her love.
Gladys’s family would like to thank the staff at Extendicare Kapuskasing for providing her care, especially during these challenging times.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 12, 2023 at St. Patrick's church at 1:30 p.m. with Father John Okoh presiding, with interment to follow at the Kapuskasing Cemetery. Donations to the Sensenbrenner Hospital Auxiliary in Gladys’s memory would be greatly appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy. ©

Gladys est née à Ottawa, le 31 août 1924. Elle a grandi à New Britain, Connecticut, avant de revenir au Canada avec ses parents et sa fratrie. Elle rencontra Edward à Ottawa et, ensemble, ils ont élevé leur famille comprenant cinq garçons et une fille à Kapuskasing. Gladys fut une « femme au travail » pionnière, faisant carrière en finances pendant plus de quatre décennies, commençant chez Stanley Tools à Connecticut et se terminant au Conseil scolaire de Kapuskasing. Gladys chérissait les nombreuses années de bénévolat auprès des Auxiliaires de l’Hôpital Sensenbrenner et la CWL de l’église St. Patrick, recevant l’adhésion à vie en reconnaissance de ces deux engagements, source de grande fierté chez elle.
Gladys laisse dans le deuil ses fils : Douglas, David (Denise), Brian (Hélène) et Kevin (Diane); sa fille, Valerie Silas (Marc); et belle-fille, Diann. Gladys est grand-maman de 11 petits-enfants : Duane (Collin), Keith (Stacie), Joel (Natalie), Ryan, Craig, Jason (Virginia), Tania (Corey), Bryana, Brandon (Tara-Lynn), Conor (Émilie) et Kalem (Bryanne). Elle est arrière-grand-mère de Courtney, Jenevieve, Ethan, Keira, Elijah une nouvelle addition, Evy. Gladys laisse dans le deuil également son frère, Robert Hastings; et plusieurs nièces et neveux.
Gladys fut prédécédée par son époux, Edward; et son fils, Ronald; de même que ses parents, John et
Bertha Hastings; et deux sœurs : Winnifred Chappel et Edna Hastings.
Elle notait dans son annuaire lors de sa remise de diplôme, en 1942 : “J’aime la nature, et près de la nature : l’art.” Ces passions ont duré toute sa vie. Gladys aimait écrire et exprimait sa créativité par la peinture, le tricot et le jardinage. Elle suivait les nouvelles de près et tentait de se tenir au courant de ce monde en changement. Gladys était une “femme intelligente” et résiliente en plus! Elle était des plus heureuses lorsqu’entourée de sa famille, et nous serons toujours reconnaissants de son amour.
La famille de Gladys tient à remercier le personnel du foyer Extendicare Kapuskasing pour les bons soins prodigués, surtout en ces temps des plus difficiles.
La célébration eucharistique aura lieu le vendredi 12 mai à 13h30 en l'église St. Patrick avec le Père John Okoh comme célébrant. L’inhumation suivra au Cimetière de Kapuskasing. La famille sera très reconnaissante de dons commémoratifs aux Auxiliaires de l’Hôpital Sensenbrenner comme témoignages de sympathie. ©
