Obituary for Charles Robert "Chas" Swain

Charles Robert "Chas" Swain
On December 20th 2012, Charles Robert Swain, 77, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at Sensenbrenner Hospital. Charles spent his last days surrounded by his loving family. Chas is survived by his wife of 57 years Irene Swain, children Holly (Leonard Maschio), Bill (Carole Guillemette), Wendy (Nick Leniuk) and Carrie. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren; Jessica (Terry), Chuck (Christianne), Randy (Emilie), Jordan (Roxanne), Bryan (Monique), Joshua, Anthony, Madisyn, Oliver, William and Malcolm. Also by his great grandchildren; Cameron, Dylan, Abigail, Katia, Caleb and Zachary. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley (Harold Casson) and brother Leonard Swain (late Helen).

Born in 1935, Chas preferred skates to shoes and ice to concrete. Being an active member of the community, he not only played Senior A hockey in his youth but also coached and at one point held the position of President of Kapuskasing Minor Hockey. Following his years of playing competitively, he continued to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the ice. His love for hockey followed him later in life. Only at the age of 75 did he choose to hang his skates. Aside from his dedication to hockey, Chas also was a member of the Kapuskasing Curling Club.

His love for the Toronto Maple Leafs created a long lasting tradition of passionate Leafs fans among his family and set the stage for many spirited debates with the few Habs fans in the family. Chas loved nothing more than spending summers at his cottage at Remi Lake, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Many days were spent fishing off the pontoon boat and many nights spent around the campfire with family. Chas will be remembered for his strength and kindness. He will be forever immortalized in his children, grandchildren and their children to come.

There will be a celebration of life at the Royal Canadian Legion, Kapuskasing on Saturday December 22, 2012 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The family would like to thank all the doctors and nursing staff that took good care of him during his short stay at the hospital. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Sensenbrenner Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
