The family announces with sorrow the peaceful passing of Hellen Marja MacAskill (nee Jensen) on August 31, 2010 at the age of 74. Hellen is survived by her loving husband Don and her loving daughter Cindy of London, ON. Also survived by brother in-law Irving (Carole), sister in-law Gisele, niece Angel, nephew Hans, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was pre-deceased by her parents Ottar and Senja, (formally of Norway and Finland), one brother Olaf Jensen and an aunt Selma Puotinen of Kapuskasing. Hellen’s parents settled in the area in the early 1920’s where their Scandinavian heritage prepared them for the harsh conditions of Northern Ontario. Hellen worked along-side her husband at MacAskill’s Shoe Shop on McPherson Avenue. She also worked at Spruce Falls in the payroll department for 27 years until her retirement in 1996. Over the years, Hellen was a member of the Kinette Club, also serving as President. She bowled for many years in the Pinecrest Bowling League and practiced Tai-Chi. She enjoyed painting, drawing, crafts, decorating, line dancing, and spending time at their Remi Lake cottage at Lefebvres Peninsula since 1959. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the Guenette Funeral Home from 2 - 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday October 6, 2010 at the Kapuskasing United Church with Reverend Brenda Lumsden presiding. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Kapuskasing Food Bank would be greatly appreciated.
